I had been working all day in an area of rocks and fallen trees. I was not really happy with what I had done, but it was time to leave and I packed my gear. After walking a few dozen yards, I saw this. In the simplicity of this composition was everything I had been trying to say, so far in vain. I unpacked rapidly. But by the time I was ready, it was so dark that the spotmeter couldn't take any reading. I guessed an exposure time of fiften minutes, and was glad to find later that something had been recorded on film!
